Discover Mexico

Built on the ruins of great civilizations, Mexico was born of radical revolution, solidified by the struggle for independence, and is now finding its place in a new era of democracy and global collaboration. Formerly the Aztec capital, Mexico City—one of the world’s largest cities—and the D.F. epitomizes the uniquely Mexican mix of past and present. Not far from the buzzing metropolis are sleepy pueblos where modern comforts are scarce and residents cling to their ancestral lands and languages. World-famous beach resorts are the playgrounds of the rich, while slums only a few blocks off the touristed path are home to campesinos, street vendors, and homeless children living in abject poverty.

If you could see it in an IMAX theater for US$13 or see it in real life for US$40, which would you choose? In the Yucatan, you have the choice. Underground cenotes, or fresh water rivers, between Tulum and Akumal provide an experience not to be missed. Riding 2.5km into the jungle on the back of a buggy, you arrive at a small hole with a ladder. It's the Tak Be Ha (Place of Hidden Waters) cenote, your first entrance point on this three-cavern tour into the waters below. Your wet suit keeps you warm and the flashlight helps guide you through limestone formations and stalactite gardens as you snorkel along down winding paths. Because there are few entrance points for light, there are no plants, and visibility is a low 300 ft. Bats flutter overhead at many points, and lights placed by the company help make the experience one that will tickle all of your senses. The Caverna de Marcielogos (Bat Cavern) and Cenote Dos Ojos (Two Eyes) will continue to seem otherworldly and impress and baffle you with their natural offerings throughout the 2½hr. tour of the longest cenote systems in the world.

Tours at 9, 11am, and 1pm daily. US$40, shorter trips US$25; 1-tank dive US$50, 2 tanks US$90. Hidden World Cenote Park, 2km south of Xel-Ha on the Tulum-Playa del Carmen Hwy.(998 984 877 8535).
